Here's an interesting technique that I learned from a savvy investor friend that I keep in touch with.  We often share tips and tricks with each other, and this one was one of the simplest ideas that I had never even considered until recently.

If you're looking to get 'an edge' on what's happening with a particular stock that you are considering investing in, something you may not know is that local magazines, newspapers and even local blogs (harder to find) actually contain very pertinent information on companies days before the major outlets report them.

This can give you a big edge on knowing about a key development of a particular company  before the general public does.   It's actually easier with penny stocks than it is with the big-board stocks, because smaller companies aren't in the limelight as much, so you can often beat most major news outlets to the punch.

A friend of mine used this technique on Sirius Radio to make a killing a few months back.   This is not the best example because Sirius Radio is a very well known company, however if you remember back in February when they were considering bankruptcy options, their stock price plummeted to a low of $0.06 a share.

My friend was able to find a local newspaper that was reporting an early story of the possibility of Sirius getting massive injection of cash in the amount of $250 million.   After doing his due diligence and confirming the story, my friend instantly purchased as many shares as he could afford at the rock-bottom price of $0.08 per share.

Quickly that news was confirmed and reported by all the major news outlets shortly thereafter, and within a month he'd sold all his all his shares at $0.35 per share, for a 337% gain in under 30 days!

If you want to try this technique, first visit the yahoo finance main page and enter the stock symbol for the company you're researching.  Then click on the company profile.  It should list the company's home town on the main page.

Then start looking for small newspapers in  your company's home town.    For example if you're company is located in Sacramento California, you might come across the website for the Sacramento Bee, a local newspaper.

When you find one of the sites, search the company on the main  page of the website.   You may find some interesting local interest stories that relate to the health of that company.

Of course, you could avoid doing all this crap by yourself and let me do all the legwork for you by just becoming a member of my site. =)
